2,000 KIDS GET SLIPPERS FROM VP NOLI

October 11, 2009

AROUND 2,000 children in Southville 4, a rail relocation community in Bulacan, received free slippers from Vice President and Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council (HUDCC) chairman Noli 'Kabayan' De Castro when he visited the area to conduct a medical mission and a feeding program.

Youngsters, age four to 12 years old eagerly waited for their respective turn in a makeshift distribution facility at the playground of the Southvville 4 to personally meet the second highest official of the land and get their brand new foot wears.

Many of the children have been walking barefooted on the streets of the resettlement area which are still covered by 3 to four inches thick of mud since Typhoon Ondoy brought floods in the locality and other parts of the country last September 26.

"Ondoy almost took everything what these former railway families have, including their slippers. But still, we have to be thankful to God because he preserved many innocent lives here," De Castro said.

Prior to the distribution of slippers, De Castro personally supervised the feeding of children, as they also received brand new school bags courtesy of HUDCC, the National Housing Authority (NHA), and the Office of the Vice President (OVP).

He also thanked the doctors who participated in the medical mission that provided free medical check up and medicines to the relocatees.

Although he believes that recovery may not be fast for the affected relocatees, De Castro nevertheless committed the continued support of the government for them.

"There would be more medical missions and relief operations for the families in the next days. The government will not abandon the relocatees whatever happens," he said.
